KOTKA INTERNATIONAL ORGANIST COMPETITION 21.-30.11.2002

Kotka Organ Music Week 2002 provides the venue for the first Kotka International Organist Competition, where young organists of diverse musicianship will be sought. This competition is open to organists born in 1967 or thereafter.
The competition is being organised by Sibelius Academy, the Town of Kotka, and the Kotka Lutheran Congregation. The competitors will be required to play the baroque organ of the Church of Kotka; this organ was built in 1998 at Urkurakentamo Martti Porthan, a firm of Finnish organ makers. The disposition, tonal and structural properties, of the organ are based on Gottfried Silbermann's organ, which is to be found in the Cathedral of Freiberg.

The preliminary selection of competitors will be conducted with recordings as the basis. Registration for the competition ends on Mayl 31, 2002. Twelve competitors will be selected for the preliminary competition, which is due to be played in the Church of Kotka between November 21- 23, 2002.

Final to be held between November 28- 29, 2002.

The selection based on recordings will be done by Kati Hämäläinen, Kari Jussila and Olli Porthan. The jury of the competition proper will include Jean Boyer (France), Pieter van Dijk (Netherlands), Felix Friedrich (Germany), Kari Jussila (Finland), Jacques van Oortmerssen (Netherlands), and Olli Porthan (Finland). The chairperson of the jury, without voting rights, will be Kati Hämäläinen.

Kotka International Organist Competition's 1st prize will be EUR 10,000, a concert at Kotka Organ Music Week 2003 and in Alkmaar's Groote St. Laurenskerk. The 2nd prize is EUR 5,000, and the 3rd prize is EUR 2,500.

The press meeting connected to the organist competition will be held in the Church of Kotka on Tuesday, September 18, 2001 starting at 11 am, which will also be the occasion for making public the organist competition's website. Jyrkilä Oy's coach transportation to the press meeting will depart from Helsinki (Finlandia Hall's parking area at 8.30 am. Coffee will be served during the trip. Following the press meeting, lunch will be served at Kotkan Klubi (address: Kirkkokatu 2, tel. +358 5 215 020). After lunch, the coach will make the return trip to Helsinki. The first Kotka International Organ Competition 2002 will be organized during the annual organ week in Kotka, Finland. The organizers are the City of Kotka, the Kotka Parish and the Sibelius Academy. The competition will take place 21.-30.11.2002 in the Kotka church.

The organizers wish to promote young organists with wide and solid professional skills. The winners should have a strong artistic profile,excellent organ technique,ability to compose interesting recital programmes, and ability to lead a baroque ensemble. The competition is open to all organists born in or after the year 1967.

By dead line the end of May 2002 the organizers received 18 applications from 13 different Asian,European,African and Northern American countries.

The preliminary selection ofcompetitors was done on 12.6.2002 based onrecordings by professor Kati Hämäläinen,professor Olli Porthan and professor Kari Jussila from Sibelius-Academy.

Kotka International Organ Competition organisers are the Town of Kotka, Kotkan Congregation and Sibelius Academy. The competition will be held using the baroque organs of the Church of Kotka were built at the Martti Porthan organworks in 1998. The disposition and voiced and structural properties of the instrument are based on the organ of the Freiberg Cathedral (1714) constructed by Gottfried Silbermann.

The competitors arrived in Kotka yesterday, Sunday, but not without some mishaps. Herman Jordaan’s luggage arrived on Monday. Hue-Sun Park had slipped on the tarmac of Berlin airport and had to receive some medical treatment for a slight ankle injury. However, Hue-Sun Park was able to take part in Monday’s rehearsals.

The information meeting also revealed that two of the sponsors of the competition, Kotka Co-operative Bank and V. Jyrkilä Oy, have bought the concerts on Thursday 21 November (beginning at 15.00 and 17.00) and consequently there is free admission to the public to these concerts. “It’s important that the local business life supports significant local events,” said managing director Seppo Jyrkilä. “That’s one way to create a positive image for the town.”

Olli Virtaperko (born in 1973) started his composition studies in 1993 in Edinburgh with Peter nelson and Nigel Osbourne and continued them at the Sibelius Academy with Tapio Nevanlinna. Virtaperko has wide interests in music: he directs the chamber music group Ambrosius, which performs contemporary music on baroque instruments, he plays the baroque and modern cello, and is producer for the record company Ambrosius Entertainment. He also worked as singer in the popular music group Ultra Bra.

Ere Lievonen (born in 1972) is a harpsichordist, organist, pianist, and composer. After studying at the Sibelius Academy, he moved in 1997 to the Netherlands to study with Jacques van Oortmerssen, Jacques Ogg, Siebe Henstra, Annelie de Man, and Rafael Reina. He has also taken part in several harpsichord and organ masterclasses. At present he is preparing his Master of Music degree in Contemporary Music at the Amsterdam Conservatoire. He has performed in many modern and early music festivals and is a member of several ensembles specializing in contemporary music (Ensemble Ambrosius, Helsinki; Uusinta, Helsinki; Axyz Ensemble, Amsterdam). Lievonen’s compositions have been performed in Finland, the Netherlands, and Iceland.

The competition's jury requests that no photographs be taken in Kotkan Church during the actual competition performances in order not to disturb the competitors.

A Master's Class Course for Organists will be held connected to the Kotka Organ Competition with active pupils Olga Kotliarova (St Petersburg Conservatory), Samppa Laakso, Susanne Kujala, Marika Oksala and Aino Valojärvi. All the Finnish pupils are from the Sibelius Academy.

The instructors on the course are competition judges Pieter van Dijk, Felix Friedrich and Jacques van Oortmerssen.

There are also 15 passive pupils on the course.
